In England and Wales since 1st April 2002 all new or replacement oil tanks must comply with The Building Regulations 2000 – Approved Document J – Combustion Appliances and Fuel Storage Systems. This requires (amongst other things) that tanks and connected pipes are constructed and protected to reduce the risk of oil escaping and causing pollution. A notice must also be fixed to the tank giving information about what to do if oil is spilt or lost.
